Basic Information

Shinkai is an open source platform for building, deploying, and orchestrating AI agents that run locally or connect to remote models. It provides a no-code visual agent builder so non-developers can assemble specialized agents and multi-agent teams through drag-and-drop workflows. The project targets privacy-sensitive and decentralised use cases by supporting local-first deployment, built-in crypto payment and DeFi interactions, and compatibility with Model Context Protocol to interoperate with multiple model providers. The repository contains a cross-platform desktop application based on Tauri and React plus a monorepo of shared libraries and node binaries that implement messaging, state management, UI components, and internationalization. The goal is to democratize agent creation so users can compose agents that coordinate complex, multi-step tasks and transact autonomously while keeping keys and sensitive data under user control.

Features
No-code visual agent builder for assembling specialized single agents and multi-agent teams with drag-and-drop workflow composition. Multi-agent orchestration that lets agents share context and coordinate automated multi-step processes. Crypto-native architecture enabling decentralized payments and autonomous economic agents with DeFi capabilities. Hybrid deployment options to run models locally, connect to cloud models, or combine both for privacy and capability trade-offs. Universal protocol support through Model Context Protocol for model interoperability. Cross-platform desktop application built with Tauri and React, monorepo managed with NX, and shared libraries for messaging, UI, state, and i18n. Developer tooling includes scripts to download side binaries such as the Shinkai Node and Ollama models, build and test commands, and CI utilities to manage model and app repositories.
Use Cases
Shinkai lowers the barrier to create functional AI agents for both non-technical users and developers. End users can deploy agents for practical tasks like autonomous trading, intelligent email handling, web data scraping and reporting, workflow automation, and DeFi portfolio management without coding. Organizations benefit from a security-first, local-first option that keeps crypto keys and sensitive data under user control while allowing cloud models when needed. Developers can extend and test the platform using the NX monorepo, shared TypeScript libraries for messaging and UI, and provided build and CI scripts. The repo also includes guided quick-start instructions and one-click installation releases to simplify getting a working desktop app running on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
